Derek was a good friend all three years at West High. He was a late bloomer, and grew as tall as me after he graduated. He was a member of our undefeated junior varsity basketball team when we were juniors. Something we were really proud of, playing in the tough City League. Derek was extremely knowledgeable about all sports and sports history. We had a lot of good conversation and debates. Neither one of us enjoyed long distance running either. I remember us in the back of a pack conserving energy. Other teammates of that undefeated team, Tracy Volker, Carlton Dienstbach, Dudley Richardson, Val Dunn, Terrill Jones, Mark Diskin, George Evans, Keith Fosnight, Ed Perry, and Otis Malcom. I ran into Derek later in life, when he was working in the flooring department at Star Lumber. It was obvious, Derek was a good man.
